FOR WHOM IS PILGRIMAGE REQUIRED?
The pilgrimage is the responsibility of the adult Muslim
in full possession of his mental faculties. Only Muslims must fulfill it. There
is no obligation, for children or madmen, according to the words of the
Prophet, who said:
"The pen (that is the wisdom that inspires human acts)
- that writes the human acts dependent on Divine Justice - is withdrawn from
three people: the sleeper until he wakes up, the child until he grows older and
the madman up let him be cured of his mental illness. "
The pilgrimage is a duty for those who can fulfill it, as
the Koran says: "God has imposed on men the pilgrimage to this Temple, to
whomever has the means to do so."
The ulemas interpret these words of God as a capacity, on
the part of the pilgrim, to pay the expenses of the trip and prepare the
necessary provisions for himself and for the family that remains in the house.
This prescription does not concern, naturally, the inhabitants of Mecca and its
surroundings.
In this regard, we must remember the immense progress made
in terms of communications, such as ocean liners, airplanes and trains. So, it
can be said that "those who are capable of making the trip, means those
who have the means to pay for the expenses, be self-sufficient and leave what
is necessary to the members of their family who are at home.
